Thornton Announcements
Thornton Receives Math and Science Grant
Thanks to the generous donations of McCraw Oil Company, Kwik Chek Food Stores, and the ExxonMobil Education Alliance Grant, Thornton students will benefit from $500.00 to use towards math and science materials.  Teachers will meet soon to determine how to best use the donations.  We will look for durable materials that will help  the most students possible.

Thornton would like to show its special appreciation to our neighborhood Kwik Chek Exxon at the corner of Oakdale Drive and Thornton Lane.  Without their support, this grant would not have been possible.  Please visit the store and let them know how much this means to our community.
El Chico Night
Join the Thornton family for dinner at El Chico on Thursday, January 26th from 5:00 PM to close. El Chico is donating a portion of the proceeds to the Thornton PTO. When ordering your food, please let El Chico know that you are there in support of Thornton Elementary.
STAAR Testing is Coming Soon!
The State of Texas Assessement of Academic Readiness, or STAAR test is coming very soon.  All students in grades 3-8 will take the state standardized tests as part of our state and federal requirements to satisfy the accountability rating and determine Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

STAAR replaces TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) in Elementary and Middle Schools.  Since this is a new assessment and is much more complex than in years past, the state is giving us a grace year and will not change our accountability rating next year (we will still be Academically Acceptable).  However, the US Department of Education will still use the tests to determine much of our federal grant money.

Here are the dates of the different tests:

Tuesday, March 27:  Grade 4 Writing (Day 1) and Grade 5 Mathematics
Wednesday, March 28: Grade 4 Writing (Day 2) and Grade 5 Reading

Tuesday, April 24:  Grade 3 Mathematics and Grade 4 Mathematics
Wednesday, April 25:  Grade 3 Reading and Grade 4 Reading
Thursday, April 26:  Grade 5 Science

Our campus will be in test mode on those days.  This means that activities, recess, and movement through the building will be very limited.  We respectfully ask that you do not visit the school on these mornings to maintain the best testing environment possible.

For more information from the State of Texas concerning STAAR, Click Here.
Thanks to the 21st!
Thornton would like to give a big shout out and thanks to the 21st Combat Support Hospital for adopting our school.  Colonel David Ristedt (pictured), Sgt. Bayyinah Antoine and Specialist Alicia Gunner have been a huge help in getting things started for the year.  We had the ribbon cutting ceremony on our new sign on January 20th.  The 21st is helping with tutoring, mentoring and special events.  We look forward to working with them and are thankful that they are helping make Thornton the best school in Temple!
